Please notify the Hospital at your earliest possible convenience if you have a latex allergy or any special dietary requests.
Please follow your surgeon's instructions about eating prior to surgery. If, for example your surgeon states "nil by mouth from 8.00 am" it is very important that you do not eat or drink after 8.00 am on the day of your operation.
It is usual for the anaesthetist to see you in Hospital prior to surgery. Your operation may be scheduled towards the end of the operating list. This will result in delay between your admission and your operating time. We suggest that you bring in reading material or something to do to help pass the time.
We request that prior to your admission, you obtain a printed list of all your prescription medicines from your Pharmacist and/or General Practitioner. Please either:
Attach the lists to your admission form when returning it or
Bring the lists with you on admission or
Ask your Pharmacist or General Practitioner to fax the lists to St George's Hospital - fax number 0-3-355 2057
Please also bring with you on admission:
The medications you are currently taking in their original packaging
Any alternative, non prescription or herbal / Rongoa Maori medications you are taking
If your medications are in a blister pack prepared by the Pharmacist, the medications will be listed on the back. However a printed list from your Pharnmacist or General Practitioner is still required.
You will require:
Any X-Rays (which may be relevant), crutches or braces
Details of your medical insurance (if applicable) including copies of any letters of authorisation and your membership number
Supply of sleepwear, dressing gown, slippers
Personal toiletries
Glasses, lenses, hearing aids.
Children should bring pyjamas / nightdress and a favourite toy.
We prefer that valuables and money are kept to a minimum and whenever possible left at home. This Hospital cannot accept responsibility for any items. If you have any valuables, please inform staff as safety deposit facilities are available.
Most children's hospital stays are short and each child's requirements are unique. We encourage parents to discuss their child's accommodation arrangements with their surgeon prior to admission. Once in Hospital please do not hesitate to discuss your child's needs with the Charge Nurse.
Meals can be purchased by parents in the Hospital Café. There is no charge for a parent wishing to stay the night in a lazy boy chair in the child’s room, however if you wish to stay the night in a bed and have a full meal service you will be charged a fee. Parents may also accompany children to the Anaesthetic Room if they wish.
The DeliMarché Café is available for visitors and relatives to use. This is located on the ground floor, Canon Wilford Wing.
There is a snack vending machine located in the Atrium, between the Canon Wilford Wing and The Heritage Building.
In preparation for your discharge from the ward please make sure you have:
Please arrange for your discharge to be between 9.00 am and 10.00 am as this gives staff sufficient time to prepare rooms for new admissions. The Hospital reserves the right to charge a late discharge fee.
Prior to leaving the ward, please check with the nursing staff. If you are feeling unwell please discuss your discharge with your Charge Nurse.
